Profile

A graduate of Macquarie University, Professor Richardson has had nearly 20 years of experience working in law schools in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Canada. Since early 2011, he has held the Senior (tier 1) Canada Research Chair in Environmental Law & Sustainability at the University of British Columbia. Earlier, he was a Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto (2003-10) and before then he lectured at the law faculties of the University of Manchester (1999-2002) and the University of Auckland (1996-99). Prior to working in academia, Professor Richardson had stints in policy and consultancy roles for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service in Sydney and the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) in Kathmandu and Nairobi. Global recognition of his scholarship includes earning the Research Excellence Prize (2010) from the UN Principles for Responsible Investment Academic Network, and jointly winning the Senior Scholarship Prize (2012) of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law.

Teaching Responsibilities 

HDR supervision and teaching in the areas of corporate social responsibility, environmental law and policy, and Indigenous peoples and the law.

Research Interests

Aboriginal legal issues, corporate social responsibility, environmental law and policy, fiduciary and trusts law, international and transnational law, legal theory, and socially responsible investment governance.
