SPECIAL FEATURES

Francis Forbes  is the only New South Wales Chief Justice to have written  music, so far as we know.  His composition is known as  ``Up the Pond."

Some of the material produced  in these years, although not decisions of the courts, is so important that we have decided to include it.  Our first addition of this kind are the personal letters of Burton J written in New South Wales.  The most significant part of this correspondence concerns his disappointment at not being appointed Chief Justice in place of Francis Forbes.  We also have a letter written while he was on circuit as a judge in the Cape Colony, in Africa.

We have also included a poem called A Convict's Tour to Hell.  It is particularly relevant to the murder of Dr Wardell, which led to R. v. Jenkins and Tattersdale, 1834.

The mere ravings of a drunken lunatic, or the first work of literature to be written in Australia?  The 1792-1794 diaries of Richard Atkins, Judge Advocate of New South Wales.
