criminal prosecutions, right to counsel

Supreme Court of New South Wales, Moreton Bay

Dickinson J., 13 November 1852

Source: Moreton Bay Courier, 20 November 1852, p. 4

THE Circuit Court was opened this morning, before His Honour Mr. Justice Dickinson. Mr. Purefoy's Commission, as Prosecuting Counsel, was read by the Clerk. Mr. Purefoy intimated to the judge that some of the persons to be tried wished to be defended by Counsel, and that, as no other Barristers were on the Circuit it would be a benefit to them if Solicitors were allowed to act. His Honour expressed his willingness to hear any gentlemen of that grade, as defendors.
