International Interships
Students interested in international law and international relations may wish to pursue opportunities to undertake internships at international organisations or non-governmental organisations. International internships will enable you to develop further your legal research and writing skills, as well as promoting greater cultural awareness and enriching your understanding of international and national legal processes. Through an internship, you will be are exposed to a variety of practical issues related to the interpretation and application of international law, and meet and work with diverse people.
Internships are available at different times of year, and students may wish to add them on to time spent studying abroad or to pursue them during summer breaks. Internships usually last between two and six months, and may be available at different times of year. One disadvantage to many of the internship programs is that they are unpaid. Also, the application process can be quite slow and so it is advisable to plan ahead if this is something you are interested in doing. Some programs seek “graduate” students and in this instance, students who have completed the non-LLB component of their degree would be eligible to apply. You should refer to the specific programs for relevant application criteria.
At present, there is no formal program available for students to undertake international internships for credit towards their LLB. While there are plans to establish such an internship program, it is unlikely to be available before 2009. In the meantime, the information about international internships is being made available for those interested in such an experience. Beyond the skills and experience gained, international internships may be extremely useful for networking and learning of job opportunities in international law.
