Waivers
A number of Business Law units have prerequisite requirements. For example, BUSL201 Law in Australian Society has a GPA prerequisite of 2, and BUSL301 Law of Associations has the prerequisite unit BUSL250 Business Law.
Why you may need a Waiver
If you fail to satisfy the prerequisite for a Business Law unit, you must apply to the Business Law Department for a waiver. If your waiver application is successful, you will be permitted to enrol in a unit for which you do not meet the relevant prerequisite. The Business Law Waiver Officers are Ms Penelope Janu and Ms Niloufer Selvadurai.
Application Procedure
Two weeks before the commencement of enrolment in each semester, a notice will be placed on the Business Law Notice Board (outside room W3A 434) detailing waiver application submission dates, and notification results dates.
Waiver forms are available from the Student Centre. Complete all sections of the waiver form, and make sure you attach a copy of your academic record – if you fail to do so your waiver will not be processed. Leave your form in the marked box outside W3A 434 by the relevant submission date.
If your waiver is approved
You will now be able to enrol in the relevant unit, online or on campus, during the enrolment period. There is no need to collect your waiver form from the Department of Business Law because your approval will have been entered online prior to the enrolment period.
If your waiver is rejected
You may not enrol in the requested unit, but may be able to do so in the next semester if, for example, your GPA increases, or you improve your academic performance overall.
Late waiver applications
This is an application which has been lodged after the waiver application submission date (see application procedure, above). Although late waiver applications will be considered by the waiver officers, the result of a late waiver application will not be published until after the enrolment period has ended. Accordingly, you must enrol in the enrolment period, on the basis that the waiver has not been approved.
If your late waiver does receive approval (check the notice board after the enrolment period for late waiver application results) you can enrol in the approved unit and change your other enrolment details as required during change of program sessions which take place in the first two weeks of the semester.
Why is the Department of Business Law making my life difficult?
Actually, it isn’t. We want to make sure those decisions on the granting, and refusing, of waivers are made fairly and equitably, in the interests of all students. If your waiver application is granted ‘on the spot’, whether it is a late waiver application or not, another student (who may even meet the prerequisite for the unit) may miss out on enrolment in the relevant unit. The deadlines for submission of waiver applications and late waiver applications ensure that all waiver applications will be considered for a place in a requested unit.
Please remember – the reason you are applying for a waiver is almost always because you fail to meet a basic prerequisite for a unit. Submit your waiver on time, make a strong case for why you should be given a waiver approval, attach a copy of your academic record, and we will endeavour to assist you in your request.
