Language/Numeracy Support

LANGUAGE

If you are also finding it difficult to cope with the English language, or feel that your English skills could be improved, the Department of Linguistics offers ‘English for Academic Purposes’ (EAP) programs. The EAP section of the Department of Linguistics specialises in teaching and researching the different kinds of knowledge and skills that are needed to operate and communicate effectively in academic and professional settings.

The EAP section offers two credit-bearing units along with a range of other support services for students of Macquarie University whose first language or main home language is other than English. The offerings of the section are designed to meet the language and learning needs of International Students and of Australian students for whom English is a second or additional language.

EAP offerings equip students with the language skills and language-based learning skills they will need to get the most out of their other subjects. The credit-bearing units EAP100 and EAP101 can be integrated into many different study patterns and enhance a wide range of majors. The units introduce students to the academic culture of an Australian university, to academic styles of communication and to the expectations of lecturers. Typical university tasks and assignments are examined, and students learn how to respond appropriately to these.

EAP100 and EAP101 are worth three credit points each for undergraduates. Postgraduate students can make special arrangements with Macquarie International to have these units added to their course of study.
