The purpose of the prize is to reward and acknowledge academic research and writing excellence by Macquarie LLB students in Level 400 or 500 elective, or in a supervised Legal Research Project.
-
The essay must have been written in the same year as it is submitted for the prize.
-
Papers may be submitted on any topic. All papers must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from an academic who assessed the paper in the LLB. A maximum of two student essays from any Level 400 or 500 elective may be recommended for the prize in any given year. To receive a recommendation, the essay must be an outstanding example of academic research, demonstrating novelty in thought or analysis as well as excellence in research, structure and style.
-
Papers will be assessed by members of the Editorial Committee of the Macquarie Law Journal, or people appointed by them to engage in the assessment process.
-
The winner will receive a certificate of commendation at the annual prize giving ceremony, and will receive a copy of the Macquarie Law Journal for that year.
-
The Executive Editor will assist the winner of the essay prize to seek publication of the essay in a relevant journal.
-
The prize will first be awarded in 2003, and annually thereafter. However the Editorial Committee may choose to make no award in a particular year if the standard of nominations so warrants. Furthermore, the Editorial Committee may at their discretion formally award one or more nominated essays the title 'Highly Commended'.
-
The discretion of the Editorial Committee over the awarding of the prize is complete and final in all regards.
-
The Editorial Committee may vary the terms of the prize from time to time.
