Macquarie Law School
Future Students
Welcome to the Macquarie Law School website, where you will find all your questions about future study answered. Whether you are interested in studying full-time on campus in a combined degree program, as a part-time student via distance education, or if you have previously taken another path and are now studying as a graduate student, the Law School has a number of options to ensure you receive the best possible legal education at Macquarie University.
It is the combination of both breadth and depth in approach that makes our law degrees unique. You will benefit from the experience of dedicated teachers, many of whom have been practising lawyers and barristers and are currently active researchers in their specialised fields.
First-year law units do not require any assumed knowledge, prerequisites or recommended studies. Other units taken as part of any combined degree may require assumed knowledge, prerequisites or recommended studies, and you should refer to the relevant page of the Macquarie Future Students website.
A Macquarie law degree will equip you to be so much more than just a lawyer. It will provide you with creative problem-solving skills, critical thinking and analytical skills, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively and give you leadership capabilities, all of which are the skills employers really look for in a graduate. Legal professionals have told us that a graduate from Macquarie is an asset to their firm because they are willing to challenge assumptions, articulate their reasoning and defend their conclusions.
Among our group of skilled and respected alumni from around Australia and across the world, many are practising lawyers in firms, corporations, government legal aid or at the bar. Others have been appointed to the judiciary and now sit as judges. Many others are to be found in very different roles - an Australian diplomat working in Afghanistan to help rebuild local communities, lawyers working with the United Nations and its agencies in developing policy and shaping the future of international law and politics. Yet others have found their way into the broader business community as investment bankers, managing corporations and working as regulators.
We believe that Macquarie graduates are well equipped to practise law and apply their legal skills in diverse contexts. Our students are taught to think about the law, how it operates, and why - not just what the law is. Over the last 30 years, our graduates have demonstrated that with a law degree from Macquarie, you have opportunities to go where you want to become the lawyer you want to be.
