Overview of the Conference

The conference provides a forum for the exchange of ideas, information and research findings about environmental taxation across international boundaries and across professional disciplines.

Themes

The conference will focus on two critical issues in environmental taxation - the challenges of environmental taxation in the twenty-first century, and what experience teaches us about how and when to use environmental taxes.

On the first day of the conference delegates will examine the experiences that a broad range of countries have had with environmental taxes. Topics will include:

  • Environmental taxation of energy,
  • Land taxes and the environment, and
  • A comparison of environmental taxes with market-based instruments in addressing environmental problems.

The second day will focus on fiscal responses at the multilateral, bilateral and unilateral levels in addressing the challenges posed by environmental degradation. Panels and discussions will focus on:

  • Re-structuring existing taxes in an environmentally friendly manner,
  • Challenges in designing and implementing environmental taxes,
  • Corporate perspectives on environmental taxation,
  • Environmental taxation and triple bottom line accounting,
  • Theories of Environmental Tax,
  • The use of taxation as a tool of environmental policy,
  • Vehicle taxes, and
  • Environmentally detrimental tax provisions.
