The Hon. Dr David Kemp MP
Minister, Environment and Heritage, Australia.

The Hon Dr David Kemp, MP has represented the Goldstein electorate since 1990, after an outstanding academic career and periods of service in politics.

Dr Kemp attended Scotch College, and completed Political Science and Law degrees at Melbourne University, before winning a Fulbright Scholarship to Yale University for his doctorate (gained with distinction) in Political Science.

Prior to the 2001 election, he held several employment, public sector management and education portfolios, first in opposition and from 1996, as a Minister in the Howard Government. After the election last November, the PM reappointed Dr Kemp to Cabinet, naming him as the Minister for Environment and Heritage.

Dr Kemp has had a leading hand in many of the Howard government's most successful initiatives. Among them:

  • New Apprenticeships
  • National Literacy Plan
  • Green Corps
  • Work for the Dole
  • Common Youth Allowance
  • Revival of Job Placement, Training and Employment Program
  • Job Pathway
  • Job Network
  • Backing Australia's Ability

  • Reform of the TAFE sector
  • National Indigenous Literacy and Numeracy Strategy
  • Reform of funding for non-government schools

  • National Indigenous Youth Leadership Group
  • Public Service Act 1999

Dr Kemp is a member of the Brighton Historical Society and the Baden-Powell Society. He also has memberships with the Melbourne Cricket Club, the Sandringham Football Club and Frankston Golf Club.

His professional memberships include the Australian Institute of International Affairs, the Centre for Independent Studies, and the Australian Parliamentary Group of Amnesty International. Dr Kemp is also a Trustee of the Sir Robert Menzies Lecture Trust.

Amongst Dr Kemp's pastimes are golf, tennis, opera, reading and family history. He is married with three children. He barracks for Carlton.
