Relationships Between Aboriginal People and Land Management Agencies in NSW Symposium - University of Wollongong (2-3 October 2003)

Partnerships with Indigenous people in conservation are occurring around the world, with varying success. In Australia, a recent researcher argues that ‘…jointly managed national parks in Australia remain an uneasy compromise between sometimes coinciding but often conflicting interests’ . This symposium brought together expertise to analyse the current state of policy and practices in conservation landscapes and issues in Australia, with an emphasis on developing best practice approaches in NSW. It was structured to promote dialogue between researchers, managers, policy-makers and Aboriginal people. A program included prominent Aboriginal academics and leaders, Aboriginal participants in joint-management arrangements, key non-Aboriginal researchers and Commonwealth and state government agency executive staff addressed the core issues. Outcomes will include a refereed book, refereed journal articles and direct input into formal policy development processes.

Associate Professor Donna Craig participated in the workshop and delivered a keynote paper at the Symposium entitled Negotiating Indigenous Co-Management: Canadian Comprehensive Land Claims Agreements and Other Experiences. Her paper can be found on MU-CEL’s web site under “Resources and Publications.
