Dr. Shawkat Alam presents paper at Biodiversity Conference in Nepal.
Dr Shawkat Alam presented a paper on interlinkages between Trade, the Environment and Sustainable Development at the first Asia section conference entitled ‘Biodiversity Conservation in Asia: Current Status and Future Perspectives’ organized by the Society for Conservation Biology during 17-20 November 2005 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The conference attracted 162 participants representing 19 countries from mostly eastern and southern Asia.
Dr. Alam’s paper argued that environmental protection issues were intricately and inextricably linked with the economic development of developing countries. The paper concluded that the competing North-South interests as manifested in the global economic and environmental governance must be reconciled. Recognition of, and providing appropriate implementation strategies for, resolving the concerns of developing countries will go a long way in fostering global collaboration on sustainable development.
