IUCN Commission on Environmental Law Steering Committee Meeting - Shanghai, China (1 - 3 November 2003)
The Steering Committee of IUCN-CEL meet in Shanghai prior to the official launch of the IUCN's Academy of Environmental Law. Professor Michael Jeffery will attend in his capacity as Deputy Chair and will report to the Committee on the outcomes of the World Parks Congress. Associate Professor Donna Craig, a former Vice-Chair of IUCN - CEL for Oceana and now Co-Chair of the Specialist Group on Indigenous Peoples has received a special invitation to attend the Steering Committee meeting and to report on the activities of her Specialist Group. The Steering Committee will review the draft Environmental Law Programme for 2004 - 2008 and finalise IUCN - CEL's inter-sessional strategic plan. Preparations for the IUCN's World Conservation Congress scheduled for November 2004 in Bangkok will also be discussed.
Of particular interest to MU-CEL will be a proposal to designate MU-CEL as an IUCN centre of excellence for Oceana in recognition of its work in Australia and the Pacific Islands.
