Professors Donna Craig and Michael Jeffery participated in a three-day intensive workshop to discuss issues related to IPR protection over living matter. The workshop was attended by a number of leading academics and scholars in the field together with representatives from the Ontario Ministry of Health, the Canadian federal Department of Justice. Topics of discussion included ‘Patents in Context: The effect of DNA Sequence and of Stem Cell patents on Social Policy; Farmers Rights and Patented Seeds; and Benefit-Sharing and Global Justice; Donna Craig presented a paper dealing with these issues in the context of Traditional Knowledge and Human Rights. As a result of this workshop MU-CEL has established some important links with researchers in this emerging field.
