Conference on Intellectual Property and Biological Resources : Law and Policy (1-3 December 2003) Singapore
MU-CEL was delighted to join the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law, the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, the Japan Bioindustry Association (JBA), the World Intellectual Property Organisation and the United Nations University, Institute of Advanced Studies as co-partners in the sponsoring of a major international conference on intellectual property and biological resources held in Singapore at the Pan Pacific Hotel in December of 2003.
The Conference, co-organised by the Asia Pacific Centre for Environmental Law of the National University of Singapore (APCEL), the IP Academy, IPOS and the Singapore Academy of Law, attracted a number of leading experts from around the world.
Both Professor Michael Jeffery and Associate Professor Donna Craig were invited to present papers on their respective areas of research expertise in the biodiversity and intellectual property areas and joined other distinguished speakers including Professor Peter Drahos of the Australian National University, Professor Hiroji Isozaki of Iwate University, Mr. Anthony Taubman , Head of the Traditional Knowledge (Global Issues) Division in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Professor Charles R. McManis of Washington University at St. Louis and Professor Bartha Maria Knoppers, Canada Research Chair in Law and Medicine, of the University of Montreal among others.
The Guest of Honour was Professor S. Jayakumar, Singapore Minister for Law and Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Roundtable Discussion was chaired by Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large, republic of Singapore and Director of the Institute of Policy Studies.
Ms Susan Shearing also attended and represented MU-CEL at the Conference.
Professor Jeffery’s paper will be placed on MU-CEL’s website under “Resources and Publications" at a later date.
