Dr. Shawkat Alam involved in Research Project on Bangladesh
Dr Shawkat Alam recently visited Bangladesh for collection of materials, empirical research (Case study), interviewing policy makers, meeting with trade officials, and literature review for his research project entitled, ‘Implications of WTO sanitary and phytosanitary measures and technical standards for sustainable development in Bangladesh: Opportunities and challenges’. This study will examine the legal and policy issues arising from the application of product safety regulations and technical standards under the World Trade Organisation (WTO), as well as the implications for market access particularly for agricultural products from Bangladesh . This study will show how the lack of infrastructure, technical knowledge and adequate resources contribute to Bangladesh ’s non-compliance with the developed countries’ safety technical standards. This investigation will help Bangladesh both develop effective policies, and present its case in global and regional trading. Outcomes will include recommendations for improving Bangladesh ’s compliance with the WTO standards, and formulating specific proposals for institutional reforms.
