MU-CEL affiliation with the University of Alicante, Spain - Update
Professors Michael Jeffery and Donna Craig recently returned from teaching in the Masters of Environmental Law program at the University of Alicante, Spain. They were hosted by four eminent Spanish environmental law academics, Professor Gabriel Real Ferrer, Professor German Valencia and Professor Ruben Martinez Guitierrez. They discussed further initiatives under MU-CEL’s cooperative arrangements with the University of Alicante including a desire on both sides to identify PhD candidates wishing to study at both institutions under a cotutelle agreement. In addition, Professors Ferrer and Valencia indicated their interest in visiting Macquarie and giving guest lectures to MU-CEL students in 2010.
The students attending the seminars given by Michael and Donna on the 16th and 17th of June were from various Spanish speaking countries including Columbia and Ecuador and were keenly interested in the comparative law sessions on climate change, Australian national approaches to environmental law, water resource law and globalization and trade liberalization. These seminars resulted in a proposal for joint research and publication involving Professor Craig on Spanish and Australian legal institutions for fresh water management and a request to translate and republish in Spanish Professor Jeffery’s article on the ecological effects of trade liberalization in Revista Aranzadi de Derecho Ambiental that first appeared in the Macquarie Law Journal in late 2007.
