Scholarships for Australian, New Zealand and Overseas Students for PhD Degrees
The Macquarie University Centre for Environmental Law (MU-CEL) wishes to inform you of the availability of scholarships for qualified candidates who wish to undertake PhD studies under the supervision of MU-CEL faculty.
There are two categories of scholarships available.
RAACE Scholarships (Research Awards for Areas and Centres of Excellence) – available only for Australian and New Zealand residents.
Benefits:
- Tax exempt annual stipend (estimated for 2006 $AUD18,837)
- Additional funds for relocation and thesis production available.
- Assistance with travel costs
IMURS Scholarships – available for residents of countries other than Australia and New Zealand.
Benefits:
- All tuition fees paid for up to three years
- Tax exempt annual stipend (estimated for 2006 $AUD18,837)
- Relocation assistance
- Assistance with travel costs
Students need to apply for PhD candidature and advice on the appropriate scholarship to apply for. Generally a first class honours research degree is required. In the first instance, the student must apply to the Director of MU-CEL will have to submit an expression of interest (EOI) making the argument for a scholarship. Once this has been apporved, the student is then directed to the Division of Law's Postgraduate Administrator Ms Jacquie Williams for an application package. The coordinating authority within the University will be the Higher Degree Research Unit with the International Office undertaking some functions eg. relating to visa applications.
Ranking guidelines (University-wide)
- Actual First Class Honours or the equivalent, such as a Research Masters or Coursework Masters qualification with a substantial thesis component awarded distinction or higher.
- Exceptionally strong academic performance. Mostly A's, D's or HD's. High position in a large honours class (e.g. top3).
- Some additional recognition or qualification such as a record of prizes or scholarships for academic performance.
- Indication of a strong research component and peer reviewed research activity e.g. journal publications; conference presentations; refereed book chapter or other.
- Unstinting praise from referees. (Outstanding/unreserved)
