PhD Candidates

Ana Penteado

I am a Ph.D. candidate at Macquarie University, Centre for Environmental Law and recipient of the iMURS - International Macquarie University Research Scholarship for 2004-2006.

I hold a law degree from Mackenzie University in Brazil and a LL.M. degree from the University of California at Berkeley - Boalt Hall awarded in 1997.

I am currently a licensed attorney from Brazilian Bar Association to research overseas. My thesis deals with patentable subject-matter accrued from traditional knowledge holders, particularly, for benefit-sharing. I recently presented submission 177 to the Australian Parliament regarding Indigenous intellectual property rights in the Free Trade Agreement between Australia and the United States, which is cited in the Report 61, Joint Standing Committee on Treaties, The Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement, June 2004. In addition, I have presented a paper at the Australian and International Feminisms Conference in 2004 (HECATE) in Sydney, concerning female patentees and their struggle for their careers through the patent system history (forthcoming publication).

My supervisor is Professor Donna Craig of the Centre for Environmental Law.
