Conference announcement:
Health, Bioethics and the Law: Inclusions and Exclusions
Wednesday, November 28 - Saturday, December 1, 2007
The Australasian Bioethics Association and the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Heath Law and Ethics announce that a joint conference, Health, Bioethics and the Law: Inclusions and Exclusions, will be held in Melbourne from Wednesday November 28 through to Saturday December 1 2007.
This conference will focus on the law, bioethical, philosophical and practical dimensions of healthcare inclusion, exclusion, protection and restriction.
Many questions are raised. Who is in, who is out, and why? When is access to health care a problem? How can health care needs in developing countries be best met? What is the role of religion in health care? To what extent does the law function as a social determinant of health and health service provision? Can we, in the areas of health law and ethics move beyond the identification of exclusion(s) to discuss, develop and delineate ethical and legal arguments, measures, and procedures to reduce risks and impediments to high quality, accessible health care? Should health law and ethics embrace a wider frame of reference?
This conference is relevant to all who have an interest in health, bioethics and the law including health care professionals, lawyers and those involved with the law, bioethicists, philosophers as well as carers and consumers of health care services. Special interest sessions on philosophy theory, clinical ethics, research ethics, genetics, ethical decision-making processes, resource allocation issues, indigenous health, rural health and legal issues in relation to liability for health service provision are planned for the program.
A formal call for abstracts/papers/workshops that contribute to a diverse philosophical and practical debate about the bioethical and legal dimensions of inclusions and exclusions will follow shortly.
